South 2s salvage a point against Bourne Deeping

Ron Oren

This was really one of those games with two different halves:

- In the first half, we were all over them like acne on a teenager's face. Camping out in their half, all the chances were ours. In fact, I don't think Stevie P even touched the ball, other than kindly retrieving it off the backline a few times. Despite significant pressure, a couple a shorts and loads of opportunities, we managed only one goal, though: a goal-mouth scramble that was finally pushed home by Tim.

- In the second half, Bourne Deeping were on the ascendency and pressured us to cracking. Two soft goals gave them the lead: a loose ball slipped off Steve's pads into the goal first and a few minutes later a striker was left unmarked to tap a goal in from about 3 inches. Even when one of the Deeping players kindly offered to take a short rest (courtesy of some expletives aimed at the umpires), we couldn't quite break their new-found resolve. It wasn't until the last minute when Russ decided to make a stand, taking the ball from our half and dribbling past just about every opposition player available, only to slip it past the goalie to David who gratefully hit it home.

Admittedly we could've taken far more away from this game, but it's good to have the first point on the board. We will build on this small success: onwards and upwards towards our first three points next week!

For putting in a blinder of game; for manfully playing on after getting smacked in the face; and for securing the moral high ground by apologising for the smacking party for use of some appropriate, if rather colourful, language.

For finding himself in such an unspeakably compromising situation that we cannot refer to it in polite society as this is.
