Best Foot Forward…

Flix Renny

We had a great game against Ely, however, it didn’t start well. Flix hit the match ball off the pitch just moments before we were supposed to start, then Ely took advantage early on by scoring from a lifted hit that was deflected into the goal, giving them a 1-0 lead after only a couple of minutes of play. Nevertheless. we played well as a team in the first half and had a lot of possession, which won us a number of short corners. After a few well defended corners, we tried the bounce pass, which Elaine finished off to score our much-needed goal to bring it to 1-1. On the whole we were passing and playing together really well.

Poor footwork influenced a lot of the game, firstly by Kim apparently deliberately using her feet – which resulted in a green card! (We’re getting a few too many cards this season, guys!) Secondly, an Ely player stopped a potential goal for South with a foot on the goal line. Fortunately we did some specific flick training just two days before the match which confirmed conclusively that Elaine was clearly the best and most consistent ‘flicker’ in the team so we were extremely confident that this would bring us into the lead…oh wait no, Elaine completely missed the goal. She should never have done that training!

So the Lemon of the Match award was a close race between Lainey and Kim but as we’re all a bit too nice, and it’s just too irresistible to give it to Kim for getting a card, Kim just scrapped it.

Ely were looking strong towards the end of the second half and definitely picked up more momentum, making the end of the game more defensive. Ellie was having a great game and her solid defending helped South to keep our composure. With the help of some dramatic saves from Loopy, we managed not to concede any more goals. Sophie had an exciting one-on-one with the keeper in the final minutes but unfortunately we couldn’t bring it back to make it a win.

It was a good competitive game and while we desperately wanted the win, one point is better than none, especially as we were missing quite a few of our regular players!

Question is…does this mean we have to buy Double Decker chocolate bars for training?!
