22 Into 16 Does Go

Howard Steed

Well it almost happened, but alas our plans to field two teams this weekend we’re scuppered at the last moment when our M6s’ opponents pulled out. Then came the complex exercise of squeezing twenty-two players into a single sixteen man squad. With a bit of help from our M3 and M4 vices (thanks guys!) and a couple of M5s (thanks Yuning and James Raikes for agreeing to sit this weekend out), we did it.

A clear run on the A428 meant we all arrived with plenty of time to run through our strategy and warm-up which definitely helped us start strongly, putting the home defence under immediate pressure. A rare opposition incursion into the South twenty-three saw a cross just inches from the baseline whipped in and take a fine deflection from a St Neots stick past the South keeper. A fine goal which would have beaten the best of defences and keepers. A second goal followed shortly after, but South held on doggedly until the break.

As per normal the half-time chat worked wonders (maybe we should just have it before the start of each game?) and the away team came out battling and it wasn’t long before a blistering cross from John G found Ollie R-B perfectly positioned on the far post to deflect the ball into the back of the net. Soon back in the opposition D, a ball punched in from the South midfield lifted only to find Ollie perfectly positioned once again to volley it into the back of the net. Game on!

This clearly shook the St Neots team and they started to push hard through central midfield and this soon saw them regain the lead with a third goal. This was followed by a fourth and fifth and, despite several strong counter attacks from the determined M5s team, the game ended at that.

There were many performances worthy of MoM, including brilliant debut goals from Ollie R-B and a skilful and solid league debut for Naka A, but the majority vote went to Tendayi R for some amazing defending which definitely kept us in the game.

No LoM this week, but it has to be noted that Mr Greaves would have been a definite candidate for leading the team to the wrong goal for the half time team talk!
