“Oh you think you’re going left? Well I’m coming with you.”

Sam McComish

Notable moments:

  • Alice falling over and deciding that was a good time to have a mid-match rest. You deserved it.
  • Haverhill defender stopping the ball with her leg on the line (leading to Izzy’s penalty stroke).
  • The same player sitting on the ball on the line (leading to another stroke. Bless her.)
  • Alice nearly breaking one of their player’s (estimated around 13 years old) feet, making her cry and causing the umpire to have to scoop her up and carry her off the pitch.
  • Rebecca accidentally subbing herself off at the same time as Sam, leaving South with ten players.
  • Eimear’s new best friend sticking to her like a shadow: “You think you’re going left? Well I’m coming with you.”

The goals:

  • 2 x IMP - Cool, calm, collected. Slotted not one but two penalty strokes past the keeper without a second thought.
  • 1 x IMP also - A short corner which can only be described as silky like linen, clean as a sheet, flying through the sea of players to hit the backboard.
  • 1 x Sam - Another short; a misdirected injection brought the ball out to Sam on left slip who sent it bouncing over everyone’s sticks into the bottom corner.
  • 1 x Jess - After a baseline drive from Rebecca she slipped it back to Jess who was perfectly positioned near the P-spot ready to slap it into the corner past the keeper.
  • 1 x Grace - A goal worked in beautifully by the attack from a short corner with Grace ready on the post for the deflection. We never doubted you, Grace.
  • 1 x Dani - Beautiful link-up play from the team brought the ball from Charlotte to Sam who drove up the pitch, slipped it to Jess, who pinged it across to Dani waiting on the post for a simple but beautiful tap over the line. A real team goal.
  • 1 x Eimear - This worked so well we decided to do it again but this time the bride to be was ready to place it perfectly in the corner. A brilliant way to end her last game of the season.

Man of the match votes:

As everyone played so brilliantly it’s no surprise there was a 5 way tie for MoM:

  • Izzy - 106 goals in 100 games and for being, ‘just great.’
  • Lauren - Making some great drives down the pitch and being solid as a rock, not letting anyone past her.
  • Alice - Great first L2s game (for a while), fitted straight into the team and linked up the defence and forward line perfectly.
  • Rebecca - Creating lovely triangles on the wing and driving the baseline (Paul would be proud).
  • Charlotte - Making endless driving runs down the wing from defence and solid tackles throughout the game.

Lemon votes:

To everyone’s surprise Sam was voted Lemon by everyone except Sam for:

  • Leaving her keys in the ignition and walking off.
  • Dropping her jumper in a puddle and using the hand dryer in an attempt to dry it.
  • Dropping her stick on Alice causing an instant bruise.
  • Hacking apart Alice’s brownie cake.
  • Thinking Rebecca was being serious when she said Izzy’s head was too big to get out of the toilets.
  • Rocking up with her stick falling to bits.

Special mention to Izzy for her one hundredth game and more importantly to Alice who brought the giant brownie to celebrate it. Delicious, even if it did look like a six year old had decorated it.

Well done to the opposition, Haverhill, who battled relentlessly and never let their heads drop!
