What a fabulous start!
Dani ArnoldWhat a fabulous start to the season by the L2s! Despite availability being a bit haphazard for the weekend, the L2s started with a strong line up of 13 players with some new faces.
Pressure on the opposition is definitely becoming the L2s favourite tactic! The first half began with a strong press by South on Bishop Stortford 2s. Bishop Stortford did however sneak through and started the scoresheet with a goal. But things quickly turned around after South were awarded a penalty corner, a straight strike from Rebecca, deflection by the goalie but into the open stick of Niamh - GOAL!! We were 1-1.
With both teams now in the scoresheet, things hotted up (well I literally mean the sun came out and it got rather hot on the Wilberforce pitch!). Bishop Stortford continued to apply the pressure, testing out South’s press but Annie was there on the right intercepting and stepping forward to keep South attacking the Bishop Stortford D. Bishop Stortford however slipped through and scored a second goal but again South retaliated with a goal of their own coming from Rebecca on another penalty corner!
The teams came together with the score at 2-2. The mood in the camp was positive and with the captain’s and vice-captain’s tactical speech over and done with, South stepped onto the pitch with renewed energy in the autumnal sunshine.
The second half saw some beautiful linking up play on the left with Grace, Tamsin, Sophie and Jenny creating triangles and moving up the pitch with slick passes between them. With pressure continuing to come from Bishop Stortford, Bryony did some beautiful saves, clearing the ball far away from the Stortford attack. Annie and Hayley continued to press the Bishop Stortford D with Annie delivering a lovely strike across the face of goal with Tiffany connecting well but missing the goal by a fraction!
The third goal came from South streaking towards the goal with Lucy making a beautiful sweep and finish into goal - we were 3-2 up!!
The last goal was a great team effort with Jas streaking towards the D from the half way line. Jas then expertly passed the ball across the face of goal, drawing the goalie towards rookie Tamsin on the right post who then selflessly and expertly passed the ball to Dani standing in the open goal and... well... that was history! Another goal to see the game concluded on a high!! 4-2
