Home away from home
Ruth FahertyFitting with the theme from the last few weeks, the wind was in full force when we arrived at our home away from home game. St Neots were a formidable threat, sitting high in the league, but with our away win against them earlier in the season, we were confident there was something to get from this game.
The game started spectacularly. St Neots had the first push back and passed it right out the baseline. Long corner to South in the first minute. A lot of the first half was spent in St Neots half as we attacked relentlessly with Emma and Hattie driving down the right. St Neots broke and countered with a well worked goal crossed from the right. When halftime arrived we were 1-0 down but feeling we were unlucky not have scored.
The second half started and we pushed back with no problem. Success. We were attacking even more fiercely now, with Elly all the way up in their D at times. This paid off with Hattie scoring a goal to bring us level. Only a few minutes later, Nicky scored another and we suddenly found ourselves 2-1 up. The half continued with a huge shift being put in by the midfield, Georgia and Lizzie were putting in huge block tackles to keep St Neots at bay. At 2-1, South hit the post with a shot from Lizzie, just missing out on extending the lead. Unfortunately through their speed up front and a well worked short corner, St Neots were able to snatch the last two goals required to seal the victory.
It was a narrow defeat from a great game of hockey. We weren’t quite able to find that final goal required but didn’t stop pushing to the end.
