M1 2-2 Wisbech Town Mens 1

Harry Schumann

“Let’s go out there and focus. Play simple hockey and be patient. That’s how we’ll win this” - pre-game team talk.

30 seconds and two misplaced passes later, the visitors lead 1-0. A gritty and defensive Wisbech team managed to hold off the M1s for the remainder of the first half with chances at a premium for both teams. Just before the half time whistle, Mikey G pulled off a jaw dropping instinctive save to tip a Wisbech pinball onto the post.

The boys came out hunting at the beginning of the second half with a series of PCs and a string of long corners. The game was levelled when Mr ‘I-only-score-short-corners’ Doust came up with the goods on a re-bound from a well worked slip left short corner. 1-1.

With time running out, the lads pushed on and patience was running out. This allowed a two on one counterattack for Wisbech and after being set through on goal, their forward was tripped by Mike as he tried to round him. P flick and 2-1 Wisbech. Not much could be done there.

The next phase of the game was chaotic and if it weren’t for the support of the W1s on the sideline, the game could have been over there and then. A last minute short-corner and the final whistle blown. Who steps up? Ed bloody Doust. FT 2-2.

A frustrating game against a frustrating opposition. Shout-out to Henry Blower for a solid M1s debut.
