If anything can go wrong, it will

Jan’s preview on Friday night reminded us how close we were to the ‘champions’ title and how this could effectively be achieved on Saturday afternoon (i.e., three weeks before the end of the season) with a victory against Haverhill 1.

But Haverhill 1 had been responsible for some of our worse results of the season, notably a 7-2 defeat at their place back in November. We knew this match could be tricky; but after a winning streak of 10 games, we were certainly a more confident team than our last encounter.

Here are the highlights of the game.

In the first half the L4s were battling well especially in the mid field with Becky, Claudia, Hannah, Indi and Kea, working hard to create chances for our forwards Amy, Emily S, Naomi and Kath. The L4s had at least a couple of good opportunities to score, they were pressing hard and earned four or five short corners.

The Haverhill forwards kept our defence busy with Laurie and Julie putting in some strong tackles to keep them at bay and goalie Mia making a couple of crucial saves.

A POM performance from Anne-Marie saw most of Haverhill’s attacks stalled, and the few that did get past her were confidently mopped up by full back Ellie.

Despite having a good chance, L4s didn’t manage to equalise. The first half ended 1-0 to Haverhill although overall, it was fairly even.

At half time we all enjoyed a few Haribos and team spirit was good. As we were about to restart the game, I realised I forgot my stick. Needless to say, that earned me the LOM!

L4s started the second half positive and determined to try and find a goal. Unfortunately, Captain Hannah was subbed after suffering a worrying head injury around 10-12 minutes in, as she was accidentally hit in the D while tackling the Haverhill player that scored their second goal.

With only one sub, and 2 goals down, in the last quarter of the game the L4s continued battling and working hard, but lost concentration twice and Haverhill scored another 2 powerful goals in quick succession.

Final score: 0-4.

We were so much hoping to be celebrating a victory this week, but as in the famous Murphy’s law (‘if anything can go wrong, it will’) we conceded four goals and our Captain is now injured. We wish you a speedy recovery Hannah and fingers crossed for the team next week!
