Last league game of the season

Lou Walker

The final league game of the season for the L6s. Not an auspicious start for the match. Our opponents had forgotten it was happening until this week, but fortunately managed to pull a team together. With a shortage of players available, Hattie kindly agreed to double up following her earlier match with the 5s. A couple of very late arrivals made for a nervous start. Lou came to support from the sideline following an unfortunate encounter with a ball at training but ended up stepping in to very statically umpire the first half – fortunately we were able to rope Neil in after half time.

South worked hard, making some great interceptions and tackles. There were some lovely linking runs up front between Hattie and Charlotte, showing the benefits of good communication. As always, Bex was expertly setting up a strong press on Wisbech’s 16s, many of which we managed to block. The defenders had a great game, working hard throughout, and successfully defending several short corners. They did a great job of protecting our goal, but our super stand-in GK May still got to show her skills with a couple of great saves. Emma had a great game in midfield, using her skilful one-handed dribble to carve her way through the opposition – they couldn’t get the ball off her.

With a defence-heavy line-up, several players were playing further up the pitch than they were used to, and everyone did a great job of adapting. It was an excellent team performance, reflected by the fact than in addition to the 3-way tie on man of the match, several other players received a single vote each.

It was an evenly matched game, and played in fun and friendly spirit, in which we managed to hold out at 0-0 for the first half.
