Why no Assist Queen

Alice Wright

Our 1st goal came from a selfless ASSIST from Kate into the D to find Lucia, Lucia has an attempt to lob the keeper (now a trademark move - earning that pocket-money). Bit of a blur, but believe the ball comes off keepers stick, and finished off well by Laura to put us in the lead.

Our 2nd – Alice picks a loose pass in midfield, drives forward and little unselfish reverse pass to ASSIST Izzy who smashes it into the corner.

3rd – Lovely build up play, ball falls to Alice around P spot, instead of scoring, once more makes a conscious choice to ASSIST by slipping to Lucia well-positioned on post to score.

4th – Lucia picks off a loose 16 (really creeping that 5 metre rule), drives forward, and plays a generous ASSIST back square to Maddy sprinting in to deflect home. Stunning.

5th – A beautiful direct ASSIST from Kate from outside the 23, finding Laura with time in front of the keeper to calmly direct the ball into the corner for her 2nd of the game.

The final stats that really matter:-

  • Kate – 2 assists,
  • Alice – 2 assists,
  • Lucia – 1 assist.

If the Premier League can track assists, why can’t we?

Sarah, Emma and Nic all had beautiful games (no assists through), Sarah and Emma chasing everything down on both wings and Nic distributing strongly from the back. We lost poor Jess R a minute before half time – a nasty accident with a stick to the face, resulting in a deep cut and a lot of blood. Emma had the gloves on immediately ready to practice her midwifery skills, but also helped by a conveniently located Spalding supporter/Doctor on the side-line. Jess was escorted to Addenbrookes by the Dads, and we re-shuffled to cover the gap.

Lucia finished off a perfect well-rounded game of goals assists and blistering runs with her first card (general intimidation). An overwhelming MOM, although votes also went to Emma for a great 1st L1s game, and to Jenny for her ‘directorship (dictatorship?) from the back’. First red card also to baby Oscar, sent away from the side-line to heckle behind the fence instead.

Alice carded also for taking one for the team – sometimes you just have to hack down a girl who’s faster than you. LOM votes also to (no-assists) Maddy, so disgusted by a pass made a couple of inches behind her, threw herself to the ground instead of trying to stop it. We celebrated after with L1/2s dinner at Las Iguanas, shame the service wasn’t as good as our performance, oh and 2 PhDs and a PE teacher needed to work out the bill.
