'It doesn't matter if we get relegated'

Becky Donaldson

The changing rooms were a bit quiet this week. Despite being well clear of the bottom two positions in the league, a stream of near misses have taken us from mid table to the danger zone - should three teams be demoted (which is not a given!) With Huntingdon only slightly above us, and our last game of the season against the clear winners of the division, we knew, and Huntingdon knew, that this game would likely decide which of us was relegated.

Despite Ginny and Izzy's best attempts to ease our nerves, we started the game very nervously with our normal calm possession hockey replaced with something more frantic. Huntingdon capitalised on this and put a quick goal past Zoe. We turned it around quickly though with some great passes between our forwards culminating in a great goal from Cat putting us 1-1.

Our defence worked hard to keep Huntingdon at bay with Ellie and Vicky doing some great tackles. With lots of us out of position this week though we struggled to get it through their press and 2 goals followed before half time.

Izzy gave us a fantastic team talk slash telling off at half time - reminding us that we were much better than this half was looking. I tried to calm our nerves by telling everyone that it wasn't the end of the world if we got relegated which earned me a lemon. The team talk worked as the second half was much much better. There were some great runs from Charlotte, fantastic battling from Naomi, chin just about in tact and a fabulous goal from Nicky. Ginny also put some great tackles in under pressure from Huntingdon and we finished the half 1-0 up. 1-0 up was just not enough though, with a final score of 3-2 to them.

A bit gutting really, but a second half to be proud of. A special shout out to Emily S who did incredible runs and shots on goal in her first match back after birthing a whole human. That girl is something else!

POM went to Naomi for battling right to the end and keeping up the pressure on their defence.
