Three goals and three points!

Helen Durrant

After a couple of close matches we came into this game feeling confident - despite the fact that Peterborough were as yet unbeaten this season we knew we had it in us to win this one.

Unfortunately the first half didn’t go quite according to plan, despite some moments of good play we didn’t quite get the opportunities we were hoping for and Peterborough managed to take advantage of a short corner and a run in open play to leave us 2-0 down at half time.

However, as the famous quote goes, it’s not whether you get knocked down it’s whether you get up – we did exactly that. A reverse rebound from Helen after a great short corner strike from Nicky gave us our first goal and with that the momentum of the match shifted. Some great work in midfield switching the ball and using the width, from our players of the match Harry and Eleanor, gave us greater possession. Then a fabulous cross from Nicky to a waiting Polly drew us level at 2-2. Finally a lost ball picked up by Helen who then dinked it over a couple of sticks to a determined, dogged and deadly Nicky gave us our winning goal. After this followed the longest end to any match as we desperately held on to our lead, including an amazing short corner defence from our defenders and goalie.

Finally the whistle blew and we had our first victory of the season 3-2 – what a come back. Three points and up the table we go. Our LOM this week went to Polly who was given a green card, although mention should also be given to Rosie who got nominated for ‘nutting’ the opposition – who knew we had such hooligans in the fives!
