Top Table Tussle
Georgia GrandIn a thrilling showdown between two hockey powerhouses, the L6s clashed with Wisbech Town 3 in a top-of-the-table battle. The stakes were raised higher as the team were on 11 players, despite Georgia (LOM)'s best efforts to reduce that number by filling up her newly acquired Vauxhall Corsa with diesel. Ruth astutely observed this was the wrong fuel and played a significant role in getting the captains to the game on time, if at all.
Once arrived in Wisbech, the L6s promptly warmed up and got ready for pushback. The team were planning on a heavily defensive game, and had the backline roster to match: Lizzie, Ludo, Ruth and Laura consistently marked any Wisbech player who dared venture to their side of the pitch, assisted by Elly in centre-midfield. They also played an important role in executing regular back-and-around passes. This has been a focus of L6 training recently, in an effort to retain possession during the game. It worked wonderfully well - although the team was working hard and Wisbech weren't letting up, they were in control of the ball for a significant portion of the game.
From the back, the wings served as express lanes for the L6s. Sophie E emerged as a standout player. Positioned on the left in midfield, she was always an available pass for her teammates. Despite having multiple opposition players around her, she managed to connect with Lizzie's ball multiple times and drove it up the pitch, eventually passing to forward players Hannah or Nicky. Her and Lizzie's stellar performances earned them the well-deserved POM titles.
Guest L5s player Eleanor injected well for multiple attacking short corners throughout the first half. Though the L6s didn't find the back of the net, they also didn't concede any goals to Wisbech when defending these in the second half.
In the end, both teams left it all on the field. The 0-0 draw felt like a victory for the L6s, who have lost to Wisbech Town with an average of a 3.5 goal difference since the online records began. It was all topped off by some excellent teas prepared by the home team. Spirits are high in the L6s going into next week's game.
