The Girl Guides visit Newmarket

Nic Fennell

I hope everyone's packed their compasses, because we're off on an adventure!

Saturday’s outing saw the L1s make their way up the road to face Newmarket 1s. After last weeks’ game against a tough Bury side, we were ready to hunt down the win. After some wise words by our Girl Guide Leader Jenny, we were prepared to step out onto the beach pitch and earn a win and our Girl Guide Badges (see awarded badges below).

All in all, it was a well earned 4-1 win for the South Girls. Some questionable decision making potentially made it harder than it needed to be, however, we came away with the win – job done, 3 points in the bag, time to award the badges!

Jenny - Orienteering Badge. Practical use of compass skills to judge the pitch orientation and traction of the sun. Demonstrated this skill by choosing our playing direction for the first half with hopes that the sun wouldn’t hinder vision of her players or keeper. Maybe a sundial next time?

Maddie - Textiles Badge. Fashion queen, awarded for herdedication to the colour purple. She is a true South Girlie through and through.

Lucy - Explorer Badge. Intrepid traveller, back from South America, finding treasures in our attacking half. Scored our first goal – 1-0 Cambridge! (Maybe friendship was the true treasure all along?)

Katie - Hunter Gatherer Badge. Stealthily and relentlessly hunting and gathering the ball from the opposition, on about 45 occasions.

Izzy - Upcycling Badge. A great girl for turning PC's in to goals – this time from an exquisite drag flick. 2-1 to Cambridge.

Kim - Construction Badge. A concrete player, always solid, always building. I’m sure would look great in a hard hat and hi-vis. @Chris, any farm equipment that could you make this vision a reality?

Loopy - Observation badge. Stunning advice given at half time about opposition GK. Taken on board by Lily for goal 3 (see below).

Lily - Raver Badge. Put your hands in the air (if you feel like you've been fouled and also if you've scored a goal). 3-1 to Cambridge!

Kerryn - Agility Badge. Relentless effort. Always running. Will go around and through obstacles, all whilst keeping the ball and making it look effortless.

Jess R – Skills Badge. Silky throughout, breezing through the middle, never any doubt. “Mad dog" - Pearson, K. 2024.

Anna - Entrepreneur Badge. If tackles were money, she would be rich.

Sophie - Young Leader Badge.  2000s baby but you wouldn't know it watching her play.

Evie - Musical Badge. Mad skills on both the Kazoo and the hockey pitch. Would trust her with the ball and also with my life.

Hannah - Helper Badge. Assists for days, stopped at shorts, drove the wings, picked up the ball. I’m sure she’d pick you up from the airport if you asked nicely (or would send Will).

Jess B - Kris K Badge. Momager, supporter, encourager, would take 10% if we got paid. “You’re doing amazing sweetie”.

Nichola - Human Rights Badge. Protesting for what is right and fair. Demonstrated this by shouting very loudly at the umpire during an attacking short corner from the side line. Earned LOM for her efforts and dedication in obtaining this badge.
