M2 3-3 City of Peterborough Mens 3

John West

After a result last week that none us wish to remember, we travelled to Peterborough to face their 3s. With a close battle at the less-pointy end of the table unfolding, it was crucial to take points from this game.

South knew the task ahead and opened the game with the confidence and aggression we mustered for only the final few mins of last week's game. And with it, came plenty of shots on target against a CoP side that looked much stronger than the one we faced at home. One fruitful attack earned us a short corner and Pete (back in the team after his skiing holiday) sent a drag flick low, the rebound ending up at Alex's feet, who proceeded to send a reverse hit into the back of the net to put us 1-0 up. However, the news didn't look good when the second umpire motioned to the first and after a short discussion, the goal was overturned. From there, the balance swung back to CoP, an errant ball ending up with one of their forwards making it 1-0 to the home side, before Harrison later stopped a sure-fire second with his body and Stan didn't quite stop the P-flick attempt: 2-0 to CoP. There was still time to make amends in the first half though, and another short corner for South led to a similar rebound, this time to John, who put it bottom corner (just) for a 2-1 scoreline at the halfway mark.

We were still in the game and the second half bore fruit early: Ed went down in their D, winning us a P-flick of our own. Jacko didn't put on the best display (this earned him lemon of the match - footage of the flick available upon request), but the ball found the backboard and the score was level at 2-2. I don't actually remember their 3rd, but it definitely happened (potentially from a short corner?) and South were left needing at least one more goal to take anything from the game. More short corners followed and the 2s took advantage of Pete's presence, with repeated drag flicks rather than mixing things up. Peterborough might have become complacent as a result, as after we broke with the trend and sent one straight to Alex at left slip, a CoP player deflected his hit across goal into their own net and the score was levelled at 3-3. The game wasn't over yet though, and some loose marking and tackling in our D led to a CoP short for the final play, though Jack (1-runner extraordinaire) cleared the ball to end the game.

There wasn't much said here about Stan's saves, however there were many, and he was rightly voted MoM for keeping us in the match. With one game left of the season, it all still hangs in the balance for the 2s. It's a valuable point that means a draw next week could be enough, but we'll be looking for a win at home against Bourne Deeping to guarantee our place in Div 2NW for next season.
