A sweet start to the season
Evie BorgesonCambridge South kicked off their season in sweet, satisfying style with a 4-2 victory over Bury, featuring goals from Hannah, Lucy, and debut scorer Tildy. The victory left the home crowd buzzing, while Bury were left with a sour taste after a hard-fought contest.
The day began on a high note when Mrs. Snow—formerly known as Big Hannah—made a triumphant return to the pitch as a married woman and wasted no time making her mark. She scored the opening goal with the kind of precision you'd expect from someone fresh off the honeymoon! Her strike gave South a sweet 1-0 lead and set the tone for the rest of the match.
Lucy, despite starting the day hungover and sporting socks that proudly displayed her two big toes, proved to be unstoppable and scoring two goals, earning her the much-deserved Player of the Match.
One of the day’s sweetest moments came when Tildy, one of five new players welcomed to the squad (along with Herbie, Izzy S, Rhi, and Rebecca), scored her debut goal. Coach Tim was clearly proud, having gifted each new recruit a welcome packet of Squashies before the match—a gesture that seems to have brought good luck! However, does he need to re-think his sweet choice. Kim voiced concerns about the taste of the Squashies, and the team still harbors a grudge after they were denied a sponsorship deal by the sweet company last season. Despite the long-standing tradition, it may be time to search for a new halftime snack. Percy Pigs and Tangfastics made their first appearance on the sidelines yesterday, and their tart sweetness seemed to bring a new energy to the second half. Could this be the dawn of a new snack era for Cambridge South?
Bury grabbed a late consolation goal to make it 4-2, but South’s defense, marshaled by captain Jenny, Kim, Nic, Hayley, and Rhi, held firm. Loopy in goal had another solid outing, bouncing back from every Bury attack like a true star.
The midfield, led by Kate, Tildy, Izzy S, and Rebecca, kept the game flowing, while the fast-paced forward line of Mrs. Snow, Herbie, Kerryn, and Lucy ensured Bury were under pressure for most of the match.
Special mention goes to Evie, who earned "Lemon of the Match" after taking a hit in her “sweet spot”—a title that felt unfair given that Tildy embarked on a wild “Tour de Cambridge” trying to recover her missing purse before the Winter Snowcial.
Absent international star Sophie Dixon was clearly missed by coach Tim, who was overheard shouting her name across the pitch in longing moments. "Gone but not forgotten" certainly rings true here!
And no match report would be complete without a shoutout to Kate’s mum for providing the ultimate post-game reward—a delicious lemon cake that had everyone smiling. The combination of sweet victory and lemony goodness was the perfect way to celebrate a fantastic performance from Cambridge South.
