In a spirited Derby Day clash, the South Ladies 3s faced off against the South Ladies 2s in a 'glued to your seat' sort of match characterized by fun, some great hockey, and strong teamwork in our new(ish) team.

Following a very organised, professional warm up lead by el captino Steph Westy, we started off very well – stretching the pitch, holding our position, and just generally playing some pretty decent hockey. Standout wing runs from Steph and Daisy injected pace into the game, while Mo’s deflections kept the 2s on their toes. Midfielders Harry, Becks, and Em excelled in their roles, employing beautiful triangles and effective back passes to create opportunities, supported by screens from Katy B and Libby. Despite several short corner attempts and a narrow miss, the first half ended in a stalemate at 0-0.

The intensity heightened in the second half, and we found themselves on the defensive more often defending several short corners. Katy B kept us all in line (only in the D if you are squashing one of the twos!). Core three’s member Lucy played an outstanding defensive game even while nursing an injury in an awkward place. Solid as ever, Anabel also played a crucial role in maintaining the 2s’ defensive line marking out the most tricksy 2s players. Lydia, in goal, was a wall of resilience, making a series of spectacular saves that often left her on the ground, much to the crowd’s admiration. Luisa got a little carried away with overly inclusive play, kindly passing both directly to Lydia and one of the 2s player two of the16 hit outs, showcasing the team spirit that defined the match (just a little less inclusive next time please).

Despite our valiant efforts, the 2s capitalized on their momentum and managed to find the back of the net twice in the last 10 minutes, ultimately securing a 2-0 victory

Player of the Match: Lydia for managing to save goals even despite being mostly on the ground …
Lemon of the Match: an almost tie between Katy B for a stunning ariel hit (who initially lost by Rock, paper, scissors) but then won by Luisa with a rogue decider vote from Anabel.
