M4 2-2 Ely City Mens 2

Tom Blair

Cambridge South M4s took on Ely 2s in a hard-fought contest that ended in dramatic fashion. The match started with both teams testing each other's defences, but it was Cambridge South who drew first blood in somewhat unconventional style. Midway through the first half, Charlie Curedale-Rainer mis-trapped the ball in the D, but the Ely keeper failed to anticipate the awkward bounce, and it trickled into the goal. It wasn’t the most textbook goal, but it gave South an early lead.

South’s momentum continued, and it wasn't long before Tom Blair doubled the lead. Showing excellent composure, he took the ball around the keeper and calmly flicked it into the net to make it 2-0. However, Blair’s fortunes in front of goal weren’t all smooth sailing, as shortly after his second, he found himself with an open goal but somehow managed to miss, a chance that would later prove crucial.

Ely, refusing to give in, struck back with a powerful shot that gave the South defence little chance, cutting the deficit to 2-1. From that point, the game became increasingly tense, with South desperately holding on to their slender lead.

Then, with only a minute to go, the match descended into chaos. Ely, in a desperate bid for an equaliser, committed what could only be described as an assault on George Toynton, who bravely put his body on the line to protect the lead. Unfortunately for South, the incident rattled their defence, and Ely took advantage, smashing in a late equaliser to snatch a 2-2 draw at the death.

Despite the heartbreak, George Toynton was deservedly awarded Man of the Match for his fearless performance and heroic efforts. Tom Blair, while instrumental in securing South's lead and ensuring they walked away with at least a draw, took the LOM (Lemon of the Match) award for only getting the team 1 point instead of 3.

Final score: Cambridge South M4s 2 – Ely 2s 2.
