L6 0-8 Wisbech Town Ladies 3

Lou Walker

After a few tough games, the L6s headed across the Fens to face our fellow promotion winners from last season. Last season we held the Div 5 champions to a draw at their home, and they beat us by only 1 goal in the return fixture, so we had hopes of getting our first possible point or three this weekend. Sadly it wasn’t to be. Whilst the 6s are still adjusting to a changing line-up and continuing to gel as a team, Wisbech looked much stronger than last season. Once again, the man marking was not as tight as it needed to be in the first few minutes of the game, enabling Wisbech to power into our D and put away a couple of early goals. With no regular GK available, hero Pedzi stepped between the posts, making lots of great saves throughout the game, and earning some well-deserved PoM votes.  Flo, Sammy, Sarah, Laura and Astrid were working hard throughout to hold back the Wisbech attacks. Lottie and PoM Frankie were working hard in midfield – Frankie especially seemed to be everywhere at once, tackling and hassling opponents non-stop. We struggled to get the ball into the Wisbech D, with forwards often having to come back and help the defence effort. South did not let the scoreline get them down, and continued to play some good hockey, with a few good surges towards the Wisbech goal in the last quarter of the game. Just as things were hotting up, Nicky had to sub off to go for a haircut, which secured her the lemon vote!

Not only did Wisbech win the match but they also won best teas so far. Home-made sandwiches and pumpkin soup, mostly beige (in a good way!) and very tasty, proper cutlery, desert (cookies and Halloween themed choccies!), great ambience (disco ball!) and beer on tap – full marks for L6 Rate My Teas!
