A windy day at the office

Freya Lockwood

Having made the lengthy trip to Lincolnshire last week to play Spalding 1s, it was the turn of their club mates to journey down to (not very sunny) Cambridge. As I was leaving the house, my housemate asked ‘would the game be cancelled if the weathers really bad?’ No, no it won’t.

A different looking team this week… 4 of our 5 usual back line decided to all go on holiday at the same time, leaving just me (freya), but luckily some absolute troopers named Connie and Katy filled in the voids left by our disappearing defenders (and did brilliantly too may I add). Special mention to Louisa P for stepping in to help out too!

The gale force winds wouldn’t stop us scoring 2 in the opening 10mins, the first from Liv (who I’m sure was very happy to be rocking her purple bib again), and the second from Emily. Short corner after short corner and constantly in the Spalding D, we were flying, and it was 4-1 by half time, with Beth adding 2 more goals to her name.

Now before the first half, Captain Rhi told us she wanted goals in the first 5mins (which we delivered), but she must’ve forgotten to tell us this at half time, as it took until the last 10mins to add the 5th (courtesy of Liv again). By this point, Spalding had added 1 more to their own tally and goalkeeper Lou (back after missing last week, apparently uni is more important or whatever) making a fabulous 1V1 save.

It wouldn’t be a L2s game without some tumbles though, Zoë providing the best this week (not even sure how it happened really), subsequently earning her Lemon, which was also helped by her attempt to kick the ball back for a sideline and completely misjudging it). Honourable mentions to Connie, for not hearing all 21 of us plus the 2 umpires shouting that it’s not our sideline, and Liv for exclaiming ‘just chocolate?’ when Zoë revealed the cupcake flavour she had kindly baked for us.

The final score was 5-2 to the good (I firmly believe it would’ve been more in better conditions, excuses excuses I know), POM went to Liv, for the 2 fabulous goals, and excellent runs absolutely everywhere…no one can stop her! Hopefully the weather is nicer to us next week!
