The rains came and ended our goal drought!

The L4s came into this Saturday’s game with newfound optimism, despite Storm Bert looming above them. Last week was our first win of the season and we were determined to follow it up with another.
And we didn’t need to wait long! In a potential fastest-goal-in-South-history, Meg did some fantastic dribbling, beating their goalkeeper for Naomi to finish it off all within 38s of the game starting. Naomi was well on her way for the 2 goals she’d manifested this week.
South continued this dominance throughout the first half with our fabulous screens El, Avi and Ruth keeping the ball up high for more South attempts on goal and any worrying counter-attacks kept at bay by Zehra, Ellie, Nic and Rosie. Meg had a great game, running everywhere, winning 1-on-1s and was rewarded with a goal shortly before half time. For this, she was very close to being our POM this week.
At half time, sweets were dished out with an impactful team talk from Bex and El. By the fence, we could see that Esther was being too harsh on herself from a couple of small mistakes up front. She’d been in some great positions the whole of the first half, and had been unlucky not to score.
Esther pushed through this wobble, showing great resilience in the second half, continuing with her great positioning and runs and was rewarded with a goal! This resilience, alongside her great positioning and runs earned her Player of the Match.
And then the goals kept coming! Even Storm Bert couldn’t stop us, despite it trying with gale-like winds and lots of rain. Having only scored 8 so far this league season, Meg and Becky scored in this second half to make it 5-0.
A happy South went for teas where Avi nearly fought an old-man rugby spectator. Fortunately for her this was after the POM and LOM votes where there were other strong contenders this week. Naomi nearly got it as she’d left her hockey shoes out overnight to combat the smell and woken up to find them completely soaked. However, Esther grabbed the double award this week, being awarded LOM for forgetting her shoes and having to warm up in her Ugg boots.
Could the L4s transform their season from demotion contender to promotion contender? Watch this space…
