L5 1-0 Wisbech Town Ladies 3
Hattie StanleyWhilst everything else was cancelled due to the storm, hockey was full steam ahead, though conditions certainly made it harder. It was incredibly cold and very wet when we arrived but we reluctantly removed all our waterproof layers and started the game.
In the first half, we put great attacking pressure on the Wisbech defence, having many attempts on goal. Any attempt from Wisbech to attack our D was thwarted by our defensive trio - Elly, Tilly and Nicole. Wisbech were unable to get anywhere near the goal for a shot and our solid defenders easily won the ball, sending it straight back up the pitch to the mids.
The mids were working hard, driving the ball up the pitch. Nicola and Harriet B were working together well to get the ball into the forward line. Fi was also working tirelessly in midfield but unfortunately due to the slippery conditions she ended up on the floor several times, earning her the LOM vote! There were so many near-goals but eventually Anna managed to pick up the ball in the D and flick it into the goal, scoring the first goal of the game and giving us the lead.
In the second half, Wisbech upped the pressure on our defence. There were some tense moments in our D but our defenders held firm. Tilly was a wall they couldn’t get past earning her POM for the game. Towards the end of the second half, we managed to find a bit more energy and returned to attacking the Wisbech D. Desperate for extra goals, there were a few clashes with the goalie, one of which resulted in Anna toppling straight over the goalie after fighting valiantly for the ball. The game ended in their D with our fraught team incredibly close to scoring another goal.
Despite the difficult conditions the team gave it their all and everyone played exceptionally well. When we meet Wisbech again at home we’ll be aiming for a few more goals!
