The Emotional Season Finale No One Asked For

Avi Ibayan

As the sun rose on our final match day of the season, a sense of nervous excitement buzzed through the WhatsApp chat. It was giving “Are we about to go down in a blaze of glory or just… down?” vibes. Spoiler alert: it was the latter. But you know what? The L4s did not go gently into that relegation zone. We fought. We slayed (metaphorically). We even scored. And we did it with humour, hustle, and a frankly criminal amount of short corner defence.

First Half: “We Were So Back”

We started strong. Like, freakishly strong. You would’ve thought we were the team in 6th place and Wisbech were clinging onto league life. We had possession, we had pressure, and we were basically living rent-free in their D. Lou C and Becky D were twirling through midfield like it was a Bridgerton ball, and our forwards (Naomi, Kendra, Esther) were throwing chaos at their defence like it was a group project due at midnight.

Naomi was on pure menace mode, pinging around the D like a human pinball. Kendra, slick and sneaky, ghosted behind defenders like a legend. Esther, our queen of nearly goal energy, was right there on every rebound. It was giving “the goal is coming”. It didn’t. Yet.

Second Half: “The Plot Twist”

Then, second half energy hit like a soggy banana. Wisbech pulled up with renewed determination, and their vibes were “we know short corners, and we fear nothing.” They slipped two cheeky goals past us off those set plays. Zehra, our literal brick wall of a keeper, was sliding, diving, and making it so hard for them. But even walls have cracks. And short corners are evil.

Coach Nev made an appearance – looking like a proud dad and giving off “come on girls” energy from the sideline. The moral support helped. We lifted.

AND THEN. Amidst the chaos. A scuffle in the D. Naomi saw her moment. A flick, a foot, a stick, the universe aligned. GOAL. The bench screamed. The pitch lit up. Naomi was a star. She is a star. We all believed.

But alas, belief isn’t always enough. The final whistle blew, and the dream ended. Relegation confirmed. Even if we’d won, the cruel math of the league meant we were doomed. But guess what? The vibes? Immaculate.

Let’s Talk About the Heroes

Ell, our dependable, unshakeable captain and screen/general boss of vibes. You lead with calm and well-timed yelling, and this season wouldn’t have worked without you.

Bex, co-captain and inner/forward menace, your enthusiasm and speed honestly makes it feel like we might win any game we’re in. Also, the team spirit? Off the charts.

Avi – self proclaimed Swiss Army knife of a player. Defence? I eat attackers for breakfast. Forward? Consider me a sprint goblin that gives the opposition nightmares. (For legal reasons this is a joke)

Rosie, calm defender energy, aka “I got this” in human form. You always made us feel safe back there.

Ellie, tactical queen. You read the game like it’s a sad romance novel and intercept everything. Low-key underrated genius.

Faye, cool as a cucumber under pressure. Always there to tidy up chaos with perfect timing and subtle savagery.

Zehra, the goalie, our final form. You faced short corners like a warrior and somehow still laughed through it. Protector of hopes.

Vinnie, strong, solid, and in every place at once. You are the glue of the midfield. We don’t know how you do it, but thank god you do.

Lou C, your energy and drive on pitch are elite. Always creating, always fighting, and always yelling something encouraging.

Becky D, a midfield ninja. Silky skills, great passes, and never not trying to make something happen. You give main character energy.

Naomi, goal-scorer, chaos gremlin, ball magnet. You made defenders cry and us cheer. What a way to end the season.

Kendra, elusive and elegant. You move through the pitch like a rumour – defenders hear you’re coming but can never quite stop you.

Esther, constant pressure, amazing positioning, and pure team spirit. You’re always there at the right time, and we love that about you.

Shoutout Queens (aka Didn’t Play But Are Still Legends)
Julie, our defensive rock who unfortunately sat this one out. You’ve been a fortress all season and we missed you dearly.
Nicole, calm and reliable with vibes for days. You were in our hearts even if not on the pitch.
Ruth, midfield master and screen goddess – we felt your absence deeply.
Claudia, currently injured but spiritually still bossing the midfield with her legendary watch-from-the-sideline support.

In Conclusion: Sad But Funny But Also Proud

Yeah, we got relegated. But not because we didn’t fight. We went out swinging, and probably a few questionable tackles.

To our captains, Bex and Ell – thank you. For organising, for yelling, for caring. You gave your hearts to this team.

Up the squad. Down the division. However, we are all in this….together (High School Musical, 2009). The L4s don’t disappear – we reload. Next season is gonna be a redemption arc. Stay tuned.
