L3 2-2 Cambridge City Ladies 5
Kristina CoxIf ever there was a match that proved we can overcome absolutely anything, this was it. The L3s arrived to face Cambridge City after a morning of challenges that included a broken-down car, freezer-defrosting distractions, and a few slightly rushed arrivals. Somehow, despite the pre-match chaos, South were ready to go.
From the first whistle, South took the game to a youthful and energetic City side, playing some genuinely gorgeous hockey. Suzie worked tirelessly in midfield, linking defence and attack, while Hattie made some brilliant runs that caused problems all afternoon. Lily's pace was on full display as she hunted down every loose ball and kept the City defence under pressure.
It was Lily who gave South the breakthrough, finishing off a great move to put South 1-0 up. City responded well and found an equaliser before half-time, leaving the game finely balanced at 1-1.
The second half continued at a frantic pace. Gemma wove around City's youngsters with silky skills, while Katie, as always, relentlessly hassled opponents and won the ball back. Tara made an impressive L3s debut (woop woop), and Hannah looked the part in her debut outing in a brand-new shirt (very snazzy).
At the back, Annabel, Jess, Warbs and Tina were solid throughout, dealing calmly with City's attacks and ensuring South stayed firmly in the contest. Behind them, Selene was fantastic as always, making key saves and keeping the team organised.
The biggest cheer of the day came when Kendra capped off her eventful journey with a well-taken goal. Having already conquered roadside adversity before pushback, scoring seemed only fair. Her goal helped South battle their way to a well-earned 2-2 draw, a result that felt fully deserved after such a determined team performance.
The POM award went to Kendra for overcoming car trouble and then finding the back of the net. Meanwhile, LOM went to me (Tina) for an "own goal", but thankfully the rules have changed, so it was actually just a clearance off the back line! A huge sigh of relief swept across the team, and my reputation remains intact... for now.
So, despite late arrivals, mechanical failures, freezer-related distractions and the usual 3s excitement, the team came together to play some lovely hockey and left the pitch celebrating a hard-fought 2-2 draw. Not a bad afternoon's work at all.
