This is why "development" games are a good thing
John GreavesTHe sun was shining, both teams brought along a mix of youngsters starting their league hockey journey, and experienced oldsters keen to help them, whilst making it a good competitive game. This is what "development" hockey is all about. On this occasion CSHC M6s came out on top by playing as a team wisely, enabling everyone to contribute, resulting in a solid 4-0 home win. All the joy of hockey was seen...
Peter Creed bossing things in the centre, making great passes to forwards and grabbing a goal in each half ...the first a neat shimmy and unstoppable shot into the corner, the second a top-D rasper, helped by skipper for the day John Greaves helpfully standing in front of the keeper and "leaping" out of the way just in time. Peter C, and the tireless wing back / defensive midfielder Arpan, were pipped to MoM by the excellent Tom Watson - mature in an unaccustomed defensive position and racing up about 70yds away to receive a pinpoint cross and bury the ball past the keeper
The other goal came from a mellow Joe Whittaker calmly wrongfooting the keeper.
More goals could have come with great attacking moves, smart crosses and good positioning in space, the post being struck with a rapid effort, the Peterborough keeper repelling many efforts, a couple of other shots shaving the post, and an airshot or two. Peterborough kept pressing when they could but the home midfield had a grip on things throughout (thank you Peter F, Justin L, Stu C, Jan B...) , able to find new lively young wingers Archie A and Noah B
The Lemon vote was unclear; candidates included the nameless player making a 2-footed sliding tackle, some spectacular misses, and others randomly popping up some distance from their offical position to confuse one and all. In the end the award went narrowly to Joe Whittaker for "only scoring one goal". Harsh
The 5 newcomers played their part; almost everyone seemed to understand the sophisticated BartonSystem (2-3-2-3; substitutes in each of 4 groups, on-off every 6 mins .... ). We look forward to good times ahead. Thank you all

Congrats, guys. A great result and it sounds like a great performance. The debutants now have an expectation that this is what hockey at South is like every week!
