Missed in the Mist

Missed in the Mist
A poem by Rob, Gem and I

A thick and blinding blanket fell across the pitch today,
Where Cambridge South Men’s 6ths stepped out to play the hockey way.
The coin toss started strangely as the skipper caught the flip,
So Tom missed the coin drop. Missed in the mist.

Poor Robbie stood in goal and tried to peer across the space,
Unaware the other net was an entirely empty place.
For five whole minutes St Ives played without a goalie there,
So Robbie missed their open net. Missed in the mist.

From the dugout, Manager Rob was staring out in vain,
Trying to spot his winger through the murky, thick terrain.
He couldn't see the far side line or where the passes went,
So Rob missed the winger. Missed in the mist.

The battle raged inside the pot, the ball went back and forth,
We think a couple chances came to prove our hockey worth.
But open goals vanished away into the ghostly white,
So Tom missed an open goal, and John missed a shot. Missed in the mist.

We looked around for friendly faces when the whistle blew,
But one familiar veteran was nowhere in our view.
We hope he's doing well and that he's resting up okay,
So we missed Paul South. Missed in the mist.

Young Tommy struggled early on, his height had shot right up,
His stick too short to properly contest the winter cup.
A borrowed spare at halftime made him play a blindon,
So we missed Tommy's growth spurt. Missed in the mist.

Back at the sheds the lock was busted, spinning in the cold,
The rusty metal wouldn't catch the way it did of old.
The weather claimed another victim when the gates were shut,
So the latch missed the lock. Missed in the mist.

Now Robbie was the one assigned to write the match report,
But argued he could hardly see a fraction of the sport.
"How can I write the story when the context is erased?"
So Robbie missed writing the report. Missed in the mist.

Yet through the blur two whistle-blowers kept a steady eye,
Tracking every sneaky foot and ball that lifted high.
The umpires did fantastic work and kept the game in check,
They missed hardly anything! Not missed in the mist.

Despite the blinding weather we came home with a win,
With Samit's masterclass in midfield making St Ives spin.
Though James gave them a pass to earn the Lemon of the Match,
So we hailed a five-two victory that neither the fog nor St Ives could catch. Missed in the mist.

Samit Salaunkey
Player of the Match

Dominating the match, Samit's touches on the ball were exquisite, and his midfield presence enormous. Shout outs to Tom, Ryan, Tommy and debutant James too for excellent play contributing to a wonderful passing game.

James Thaventhiran
Lemon of the Match

Despite an impressive South debut, James had one slip pass which will be remembered. A very harsh first award considering a cracking debut. Shout out to Paul too who we missed and hope is OK.
