A dominant display against Wisbech
Samit SalaunkeyCambridge South Men's 6s put on a dominant display against Wisbech on the 17th of October, securing a convincing 5–0 victory filled with relentless attacking pressure and spectacular defending prowess.
South’s first goal was a top left side slap from George securing an excellent first goal of the game, this was George’s first match of the season and producing a calm and collected finish is an impressive feat. However, South weren’t done for the first half yet. Jude produced a fantastic pass from the right wing to Samit infield. Samit hit a powerful strike onto the post and into the bottom corner from across goal, a goal produced from good teamwork and communication.
South came out much stronger in the second half with their passing game being at its all-time high thanks to Rob’s half time talk. His talk was so inspirational that it even got John to start passing the ball earlier! As a result of the passing improving even more goals followed. Rob got things going with a tap-in strong jab to make it 3–0, dealing a serious blow to Wisbech's hopes of a comeback. “Hockey’s a lot of running and it’s not much fun when your losing”, said the Wisbech captain. Two more quick-fire goals followed, with Jo getting on the scoresheet before Rob grabbed his second of the match to seal the 5–0 result.
Man of the Match: Clarrie
A thoroughly deserved award for debutant Clarrie, who put in an excellent performance in his first hockey match in over a decade. Returning to the sport after such a long absence and playing so well is no small feat, and Clarrie showed that skills really can be timeless.
Lemon of the Match: Tommy
In a desperate attempt to keep the ball out of the goal, Tommy produced a goal-line save — not with his stick, but with his foot! Fortunately for Tommy, this was a friendly, so he escaped a card. Unfortunately, Wisbech were awarded a penalty stroke. Thankfully, Andy, stepped up magnificently and pulled off an excellent reaction save to deny the opposition.
Andy had been outstanding throughout the match, showing great composure and making several impressive stops. His penalty-stroke save, which was a difficult save to pull off for any keeper using his stick, was the perfect example of a perfect performance. As for Tommy, one can only assume he was truly desperate to secure that sweet clean sheet. Whether it was heroic defending or a moment of sheer panic, the Lemon of the Match award was never in doubt.
Clarrie Germein
A foothold on the game in a cracking debut for South. Amazing support play. He's a completely natural wingback!
Tommy Barton
A foot on the line conceding the penalty stroke. His very first ever Lemon award. His Dad could not be any more proud!
