Men's 2nds beat Wisbech Town 3

Buoyed by last week’s 2-2 win against the 1s, a bright and cheerful team rocked up early for their game against Wisbech 3s. Shame that nobody had thought to inform the College teams playing that we’d like to warm-up, so that they kept the pitch occupied until the dot of 10:30. With schedules tight, five minutes to tap a ball back and forth was all that we’d get before the fun started for real.

Was it that they were the home team, who didn’t have to shake the ride from the Fens from their legs? Or the buzz of last week’s success? Or maybe it was the alcohol still resident in some people’s bloodstream... Whatever caused it, it was the home team that started out the brightest, pressing Wisbech back towards their d with patient, simple hockey. Indeed, it wasn’t long before a pass through the defence saw Jimmy Liu through on the ‘keeper. Showing the composure in the D that the 2s have been lacking so often, Jimmy calmly slotted the ball onto the backboard to give South the lead.

By now, though, Wisbech had found their legs and started to push back on their own. Play surged back and forth with chances falling on either side, but the defences held. Half-time came and South was still ahead by a nose.

In the second half, Wisbech clearly felt their deserved more than an impending defeat and kept pressing forward, searching for that equaliser. As the South defence remained rock-solid, the visitors started to get frustrated and the game became more of a physical affair. Once again, though, the home team kept its head, refusing to rising to any bait. Instead, they decided to take their revenge on Wisbech with another goal; admittedly, this one was more of a scramble than the first one, but they still count. 2-0 to South and steam was positively coming out of Fenlanders’ ears... Desperate efforts by Wisbech notwithstanding, there wouldn’t be a difference to the score and South notched up their first win of the season with more than 1 goal’s difference. They may not be safe yet from relegation, but 3 points added to the haul are certainly a step in the right direction.

For being in the pub during voting. Oh, and some decent hockey too.

For crimes against fashion so horrid that even Fenlanders took the Mickey out of him for it.
