Men's 2nds draw against Cambridge Nomads 2
The men's 2s put out a strong side and were hoping for their first win of the season against their local rivals, who were without a point
in the league so far. It all started according to plan both in defence and attack. Rich Morgan and Tom Anns were communicating well and were cancelling out their attackers with some tight marking, and Dom, Russ and Tim were producing some good runs and passing moves to create a few first half chances. Dom's solo effort, beating a few defenders deserved a goal but unfortunately he put his shot just wide of the post. Surprisingly the goal came from defender Tom Anns who slotted the ball home after a decent spell in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Soon after, however, the goal was cancelled out, when Nomads were awarded a free hit just outside the 25 line. An unlucky touch by Rich deflected the ball past the utterly helpless Shahbaz - a textbook goal, just on the wrong side of the pitch. Nomads gained confidence from their equaliser and stepped up the pressure. The game was close thereon into the break, with neither team having a decent effort on goal.
The second half grew increasingly frustated to South, as that longed-for goal wouldn't materialise. Although South had more of the attack in this half, it was the home side that got the best chances, in the form of a few shorts. Luckily, their drag flick were no match on the imperturbable Shabaz, so stale mate persisted to the final whistle. Virtually in the last minute, South were unluckyno to win their first (!) short of the game, when a Nomads defender seemed to put the ball directly over the backline; but it was not to be.
In fact, this pretty much sums up the game: although South can confidently say they were the stronger and more attacking side, Nomads held on with a combination of good defending and a touch of luck. With just a bit more luck, this game would've been deservedly won by South.
It cannot be denied that the team fought very hard during this game and stepped off the pitch with nothing more to give. The result may have been disappointing, the commitment wasn't - if we can harness these spirit in games to come, we will start gathering the points soon.
