Men's 2nds claim an excellent win at City of Peterborough 5

After last weeks match report which for a 1st effort wasn't all that bad, we thought we would wait for the match report to be published in the local Newmarket free paper to add it in. The fact they did not beat us until the last 20 minutes of the game might have something to do with the fact they chose not to include it, anyway I digress.

As a side we were hoping for a bigger improvement on the pitch than that which we need to make on the current attendance at training.

Bhav started his quest for lemon early on in the week. In fact the previous weeks' game had only just ended when he made his first move by leaving his stick behind. He followed this up with a week long email campaign, demanding banter, overloading spam filters, and sending everything twice. Although this did provide excellent distraction from the fact the team was only announced on Friday afternoon. One of many outlandish rumours was this was delayed we believe this was due to the fact Ron was pre-occupied getting his perm done.

And so we got to match day, it was an early start for the 2s, with many waking up to a dark cold November morning, earlier than they would usually get up for work. For once we all made it to the right pitch in Peteborough on time but our expert warm-up plan was ruined with early excuses ranging from tiredness, jet lag, feeling ill ("It's not a hangover!") and other niggling minor injuries. It turned out that none were needed.

South started well, passing accurately and with good pace, it was soon clear that this was a very winnable game. Souths retention of the ball was a great improvement on previous games, with steady passages of possession, and great distribution by the back four. This produced some early opportunities for South, testing their keeper several times in the first 15 minutes.

Things at this point were getting boring, with the opposition barely threatening our goal, and Shabaz was getting sleepy, a quick 16 would change all this with an attempted cross field ball being picked off by their striker unmarked, unchallenged and with the entire D to himself. He didn't even hit the target and calm was restored.

That seemed to wake us up and after 20 mins we would get our first. It came from a South short corner, the direct hit in by Lucas was saved, with Orens mishit follow up trickling over the line, even the opposition match report described it as such, so it was a true classic. The rest of the half was otherwise an uneventful but with lots of energy shown by South, good passing, dribbling and tackling. More opportunities were bound to come if we could keep this up.

Half time came and went, Rick we believe was channelled through Colin and came up with the inspiring words, "their keeper is good, lets pass it round him" Not long into the second half we would get our 2nd goal it came from a lighting fast counter attack. Their short corner broke down, Bhav took the hit early playing it straight to Lucas, then on to Rus, who made a great run up the right to cross it to Venner for a sweep finish into the middle of the goal. All with such pace that all but 3 Peterborough defenders were still in our half when the ball hit their backboard. Colin or as we shall now call him Rick Jr's words were inspired.

After a the defence had dealt with a bit of extended pressure, we did need something to do after all, the 3rd goal came. Again from a Bhav aerial from a 16 to Rus, who took the ball again up the line, outpacing and dribbling through 3 Peterborough defenders (who were all closer to our goal than theirs), drawing the keeper, then selflessly slipping the ball to Venner for a repeat of the second goal.

At 3 - 0 the champagne hockey began, Tom "Im not hungover I'm just ill" Anns went for an audacious, intrepid, penetrating charge through the centre of the Peterborough team, taking the ball from the top of our D right up the field into the opposition D for a one on one with their keeper. Ann's unfortunately went to the Torres school of finishing, however this did not take anything away from his showboating display of hockey finesse. (Rumours are rife that interest has been shown by Chelsea to the tune of £55m. We are still waiting for their call).

South continued to play confident, flowing hockey, keeping possession well but were coming under increasing pressure, most of which came from shorts that could have been prevented. The 5 yard rule apparently needs explaining at this point. If you are within 5 yards of a player when he takes a free hit inside the 25 do not tackle him! At one point even the umpire was laughing after a shout of "you're not 5 yards, let him run, let him run don't tackle him" deafness had apparently set in. From the resulting short corner Shabaz was beaten for the first time, only to have Colin glance it round the post.

Could we handle the pressure and keep a clean sheet, unfortunately not a rare poor clearance from South invited a Peterborough player to have a shot from the top of the D, which somehow found a gap through the otherwise (insert appropriate positive adjective reflecting commanding, confident play backed up with a high level of proficiency in his role) Shabaz (up until this point he may or not have made a save). South heads remained high, with only 15 minutes left on the clock, we refused to snatch another defeat from the jaws of victory.

For those of you who noticed the LoM nomination earlier may have noticed that Bhav has not been mentioned much since. Well having picked up a green card earlier in the match for what was almost a full on rugby tackle the real Bhav would show his true colours in the last few minutes. Not content that we may not be under enough pressure with a newly-uplifted Peterborough team decided that he should take the opportunity to display his footballing prowess. Earning perhaps some applause from the rumoured Chelsea scout on the side line, the umpire was nowhere near as impressed and showed his appreciation with a yellow card. Ironically for Bhav, had he just let the player beat him, his touch was so bad we would have got the ball back. After a small reshuffle South saw out the remainder of the game under not great pressure, bringing back all 3 points to Cambridge.

Honourable mention needs to go to the team tea that was an upbeat affair, with everyone relieved to have an all-important win in the bag. Colin took the opportunity to practise his reading, by trying to read out loud the man of the match and lemon votes - this did not go well Perhaps this was highlighted by the absence of 'Motivational Public Speaker UK 2012 (TM)' Rick Erlebach who had fallen asleep at this point (This may or may not be true), or the fact that half of the team it seems can't write in English, where is the rumoured CSHC App everyone is talking about?

After such an important win against a struggling team, we need a similar performance against St Neots next week. The only problem, South 2's only win when South 1's lose, and they are playing Nomads this week…… but then since so many people don't know we have match reports, or where to find them maybe they won't notice this fact! Experience is crucial in situations like this, and with a combined 791 caps between us this might have been one of the most experienced South teams ever.
