Men's 4ths lose to St Neots 3
Another game for South 4s ending in a disappointing result, but a far from disappointing performance. St Neots 3s always produce a close and friendly game and so it proved again as South were unlucky not to come away with something from this game as they had the lions share of possession and chances, but just weren't able to make them count.
Dave and Charlie were keeping everyone organised at the back, while Ky, David and Rasmus were keeping the Saints wide players quiet throughout most of the game. When attacks came through, Shahzad was able to repel the majority of the chances that snuck past the back line. In fact, it was a sure sign of how well drilled the back line was that South did not concede a single short corner throughout the entire game. Both goals when they came, were a result of South getting over confident in their possession and committing too many people forward, allowing Saints to break and overload the defence to effectively pass the ball around us and isolate Shahzad.
The midfield were also combining well - for large periods of the game we kept Saints quiet, especially their most dangerous player, and possession was built well from the back and a lot of good opportunities were created to get us into the final 25. Nathan, Nathan, Tom and Wilco made good combinations down either flank, with Joe and Ian working hard in the middle to break up Saints play and support the attacks.
The forwards were also combining well and creating a lot of space for the supporting midfield players to get forward. Attacking short corners were organised and remained so despite the rapid interchange of players between Simon, Boris, John and James, but unfortunately the few shots we were able to get away were being fended away or narrowly off target. How John's goal-bound shot off one short in particular didnt go in, I don't think any of us will ever know.
Easily the best performance from the M4s this season, showing that the team is starting to really work well together despite the larger than usual squad numbers at our disposal. A little more time playing together and we could be unstoppable. Next up is Bourne Deeping 5s; a team that South doubled last year including a game where South overturned a 3-1 deficit to run out 4-3 winners. More of the same would be a nice early birthday present for the skipper.
Rasmus Petersen
Outstanding work at right back both defensively and combining well with midfield to help set up attacks
