Men's 4ths lose to Cambridge City 5

In the lead-up to our last game of the year, we couldn't ignore the league record of our next opponents, Cambridge City 5s. Nine wins out of nine games. 65 goals for and none against. A fifth of those goals were also scored in the game against us (two months earlier), but with our recent improvement, we didn't expect that much of a rout again. The other, er, goal for us was to be the first team in the league to score against them.

We were able to hold on for the first seven minutes of the game, after which we conceded the first of the goals. South needed to take their chances to score our solitary one goal, but these were few and far between. Down the other end it wasn't all one-sided, with the defence working overtime and Joe making a few good saves.

The second half was in fact more open, but again it was City who made the best of their opportunities. Other notable occurrences such as some cricket-style defending from Ian and a brilliantly timed two-footed tackle from John Greaves raised the spirits of the onlookers, while a few breaks from the South bunch got as far as the City D, but were always snuffed out in the final moments. Unfortunately/fortunately, it's unlikely that we will be seeing the City 5s in our league next year to get that goal.

Back at the pub, we discussed the game over some good-old Red Bull pizzas, and Joe was voted man of the match with one of the votes making mention of his "flying saves". It was unclear whether this was Joe's vote or not. Jason's good wing play was also recognised in the nominations, as was David for his... lack of banter.

Once the season resumes, we expect that with more good performances the 4s will be able to challenge any (other) team in the league. See you in 2013.
