Men's 2nds thrash Bishop's Stortford
The men's 2's got off to an impressive start for their 2012-13 campaign winning 7-0 away at Bishop Stortford. The team has its main characters from last season, but has been strengthened by some very welcome additions, such as Jack Chalk and Bhav Virdi. New additions to the club also that played brilliantly today were Dave Halse and Oli Culley.
The first half featured no goals, but South had many good chances, Dom Nelson and Nick Venner put a nice move together, while Andy Fraser showed he's ready to play at this level, putting in impressive runs down the right wing and keeping a good width that opened up the centre of the pitch. Stortford midfielders were perhaps given a bit too much room and a couple of defensive blunders (in an otherwise solid and composed display, particularly from Richard Morgan) let their potentially dangerous forwards in for a couple of chances, but the ever reliable Shabaz Ali in goal made light work of any attack that made it through.
Following on from a decent half time team talk by the captain Ron Oren the team stepped up a gear and played some very impressive attacking play, making mincemeat of the opponents. Players were stepping away from their markers allowing some nice passing moves. A lot of running and energy from the midfielders and attackers led to a rout of goals evenly spread though out the second half. Nick Venner scored an impressive hat trick (which duly earned him Lemon of the Match for unnecesssary showboating), the pick of which was a solo effort where he collected the ball on the half way line and beat the keeper in style, having left a couple of defenders in his wake. Two goals were also had by Dom Nelson, and one each from Chris Walsh and Dave, all deserved scorers to what was an all round and surprisingly sprightly game by the 2nds.
Andrew Fraser
Great work on the wing, with no indication that he'd just stepped up from 3s
