M2s throw away a decent performance against St Neots

Ron Oren

This was one of those frustrating games that we needed to win and - to some extent - should've won.

We always knew it was a 6 pointer and that we have a disappointing record against this opposition. So the order of the day was to make sure of possession in the first few minutes and then slowly crank up the pressure. Lo and behold, so we did! In the first half, South's defence comfortably soaked up the St Neots pressure with little need for any heroics.

And as the half progressed, play was carried more and more into St Neots' half of the pitch, with the likes of Oliver Lamming and Tom South harassing the visitors' 16-yard hits. While this led to several chances, none of those could be converted. Still, we certainly felt we had the upper hand in this half.

And then it all went to pot. In the second half we came out of the blocks stumbling, rather than flying; and soon it was St Neots that nicked the ball off our defence. They, unfortunately, did not squander this opportunity: one hit, top corner and they were one up.

Although there was plenty of time left in the half to get a goal back, we lost our composure: tempers frayed, runs become sloppy and passes became ever more hopeful. And yet, even in this frame of mind, the quality of the team was good enough to carry the ball into the D, including a couple of gold-plated 1-on-1 opportunities.

Unfortunately, South's Achilles heel remained what it's been for a long time: an inability to convert our chances. At some point during the half, St Neots got a second goal in and that, as they say, was that.

Ironically, we actually played fairly well. Maybe not the best performance of the season to date, but certainly not far off either. But as long as we cannot score, our results will always be worse than our play merits.

Rock solid in defence.

Using some overly fruity language to indicate his displeasure with teammates' suggestions of available passes.
