James MathewsAfter much frantic organising midweek, Cambridge South 5s managed to find eleven players, with just four of the team last week starting.
Ely 3’s were a strong side, having been relegated last season, and they started off well, scoring within 5 minutes and also seeing two chances (including one open goal) go narrowly wide early on. The opposition then noticed that the South goal was a few centimetres off centre and they should be three up.
Rob made some good saves but South were failing to make much progress from 16s and were mostly trapped in our own half, and Ely added two quickfire goals midway through the half. Despite more saves from Rob and some good defending, Ely managed another two goals before half time.
A rousing half time team talk by stand in captain James R seemed to do the trick and South showed more attacking intent after half time. South quickly pulled a goal back through James R, as he raced clear, rounded the keeper and then managed to squeeze the ball over the line despite an opposition defender. Unfortunately, Ely hit back soon after to make it 6-1.
South’s play in the second half was much better, with the midfield pressing more and closing down, although Ely managed to convert a short corner and make it 7. With Ely still pressing for more goals, South hit them on the counter attack and had several chances to score, with James M going closest as he raced onto a 1-1 vs the keeper, and managed to put the ball past the keeper (getting taken out in the process) only for the ball to go narrowly wide.
Ely managed another goal to make it 8, but South can take a lot of heart from the second half performance, and would have been a good match for most of the other teams in the league.
Simon Frampton
for desertion - perhaps somewhat controversial as he gave the pre match team talk whilst on-field captain-for-the-day James R only turned up two minutes before the pushback
