M5 0-10 Cambridge City Mens 5

Highlights (such as they are):

  • The weather was beautiful (unlike at 4pm).
  • Nobody likes seeing Simon through on goal at the Leys and will do anything to prevent him from scoring, including throwing themselves full length at him and the ball in order to thwart him - it worked.
  • City only scored three in the first half, two from shorts.
  • City had upwards of ten (or at least it felt like it) shorts in the first half and the majority were snuffed out by the awesome combined powers of Rob, Tom, Tom, Howard and David.
  • Tom P attempted to stop a shot with his knee - it worked but oddly he didnt fancy trying it a second time...
  • Andy got confused by the repeated aerial balls from the back and decided he'd try and use his stick like a lacross stick rather than a hockey stick.
  • Joe, Ian and James were making some nice little triangles in midfield but the pesky City midfield kept getting in the way at critical times.
  • Owen and Andy were providing good width and helping break out from defence as well as tracking back when required to help out the defence.
  • Simon had a second break opportunity scuppered by the swift recovery of the City defence.
  • He also contrived to hit the post when faced with an unguarded net, although it was a snap shot volley in mid-air.
  • South poured more pressure on in the latter stages of the game after the post incident but still couldn't find a way through.
  • Ian attempted to shame City into a three cheers post-game when it didn't materialise - it didn't work.
  • South were outnumbered 5-4 at teas by City - there must be some weird "Cambridge Triangle" between Wilby and the Leys which sucked everybody else up...

The Defence
Player of the Match

Rob, Tom P, Tom R,Howard and David - take a combined bow. Ignore the scoreline, this was one of the best performances in terms of sheer effort and willingness to keep on chasing and harrying the opposition when faced with wave after wave after wave of City attacks

Andy Thomas
Lemon of the Match

Harsh to nominate anyone for this game but there were two stand out moments. One - mentioning that his socks were MIA and he was not going to buy more (even from Sports Direct) until they resurfaced. Two - taking an aerial ball above his head, in front of an opposition player and within range of the opposition bench and looking utterly bewildered when the inevitable free-hit was awarded against him. A good trapand stop, just unfortunate it was done over his head instead of waiting for it to drop more!
