L1 2-3 Newmarket Ladies 1
Claire SherwoodDisappointing doesn’t really cover it! Holding a well-drilled Newmarket Ladies 1st team to 0-0 at half time is an achievement in itself (for context, Newmarket are really good) but to be 2-1 up with *minutes* left on the clock was something we hadn’t previously dared to dream of… Unfortunately, a quick time check with the umpire showed (to our horror) that there were, in fact, quite a lot of minutes left (at least seventeen) proving that time does in fact slow to a crawl when you are knackered; I’m pretty sure Einstein had something to say about that.
Those seventeen minutes proved long enough for Newmarket to equalise off a short corner (it turns out they practise theirs, how rude!) But 2-2 would still have been a result to be proud of…
We fought hard right up until the last whistle, but so did they – sending the ball into the back of the net with seconds (like, maybe two) left on the clock. It was a very frustrating end to a very good match. Everyone played well with Georgie being voted MoM for superb defending and both very well executed goals coming from Jess.
So, that was annoying. But as a good match report should never, in my opinion, contain too much hockey we shall move on…
In fashion news, the Lemon onesie (or ‘Lemonsie?’) is this week being modelled by Loopy, awarded for some sort of stick-throwing debacle whilst in goal. Nominees also included umpire Neil, for not blowing the final whistle 5 seconds earlier when it was obvious Newmarket were about to score, and Graham for actually wearing the Lemon of the Match award on the sideline when it started to rain.
A good turn out was also had that evening at the club social at La Raza, proving that the L1s can turn up to things in full force, providing it involves cocktails. Something for the training suggestions box, perhaps?

Excellence in all positions. We're lacking a goalie next week....
