L1 7-0 Newmarket Ladies 2
Claire SherwoodThe scoreline this week makes it look as if it was a walkover – that was certainly not the case. Credit should go to Newmarket 2s for not losing momentum and continuing to fight hard even when a few goals down – there were definitely some hairy moments for South and some near misses for the girls in yellow.
Owing that it’s now over 36 hours since we played, with a Ladies 3s friendly and post-match celebrations in between, my memory of this match is already hazy, but, in some order or other, the following happened…
- We scored lots of goals, including a hat trick from Elaine and one apiece from various other people, some of whom ‘whinnied’ in sheer delight.
- George fell over.
- Loopy was awarded an ‘assist’ by umpire Steve, as one of her clearances was so spectacular it required practically no input from anyone else to find the back of the net.
- Bex fell over.
- Our prospective U5s team turned out to support: baby Ryan got talent scouted as a goal keeper; training starts this week.
- Alice fell over.
- We discovered it’s possible to play a full match, go to the Red Bull and eat an entire pizza, and then play another full match, but you don’t enjoy the second one very much.
- Someone pointed out The Leys pitch is quite slippery – yeah, thanks…
So, overall: a good day to play hockey, even if it was cold. Though, even with everything going our way, we still didn’t score off a short corner. Hey, you can’t have it all!

The "prancing pony": the most ridiculous goal celebration of the year. Lots of noise and some galloping!
