Men's 4ths come back from 4-1 down to win 5-4 against Saffron Walden 6
The afternoon started well for Cambridge South, who were at the away game ready and raring to go with 1 hour and 20 minutes to spare. South started strongly, and seemed to be the most likely to get the goals. Even the temporary replacement of midfield lynchpin Ian Marchman, walking off to patch up a cut on his thumb, by v/c Boris - one of the least favourite positions for a forward (that and defence), did not deter the away team. As Cambridge South pressed for the opening goal with multiple chances in the Saffron Walden half, a switch across the D from the Greaves -Whittaker combo allowed Boris Lossy to get a shot off from a tight angle. The keeper half-heartedly got a foot to the ball before it went in the goal, and should have surely done better, but it didn't matter. South were up.
Despite more chances and breaks from South, a one-off Saffron Walden effort resulted in Tom Rosselli bamboozling Shahzad Ali with a touch which went in. The hosts were even, and Tom had his head in his hands. becoming an early candidate for Own Goal King. A rare short-corner from Walden proved South's undoing yet again. The sneaky variation involved the push-out to be returned to the injector, who slapped the ball in at the near post. The goal was definitely stylish, but slightly against the run of play
South were once again caught napping when the home team grabbed possession in our 22, and scored whilst CSouth were puzzling over how the ball was not elswewhere up the pitch. One or two short corners then went C. South's way, but proved fruitless, a Monck air swing at the top of the penalty circle was one of the final chances of the half. What a shame that in the pre-game warm-up, Dave's short corner hits were spot-on, with one in each corner. Half-time followed, with the whole team agreeing that from three chances, Saffron Walden had got their three goals, but we should have been up 5-3. The onus was for us to get the next goal, which could change everything.
Sadly this didnt happen, and Saffron Walden got a fourth in similar fashion to their previous goal shortly after the break. At 4 - 1 that the game appeared to be slipping away. A ball to Simon Jelley's ankle forced his hitherto excellent marauding performance to be curtailed, and Nathan was shuffled to left midfield, allowing Boris Lossy to join John Greaves up front. The remainder of the game was a bit of a blur, as the old maestro slotted in three crackers, all sharp efforts from good possession, early balls into the D leaving the defence shaken, and Greaves celebrating a hatrick. Now it was 4-4 ! . The man who prior to the match was tipped by the vice-captain to be the 4s top scorer by the end of the season had single-handedly* reversed the fortunes of the game (* While assisted by a more than able midfield line).
Following this, frantic runs into the Saffron Walden defence resulted in a nail-biting finish. Three or four chances were missed, with Boris shooting wide to the right, instead of passing to a screaming J. Greaves on the spot, and another miss from a Marchman-Greaves move ended with a shot to the left. This was surely how it was to finish....
But no.....in the final minute, a series of one-two's between John G and Boris L allowed South to easily bypass the opposition's defence and get into the D, coming down to a one-on-one with Boris versus the keeper at a slight angle. With some pre-season nerves, Boris held on to the ball a tad too long, but the keeper went to ground, and a push-pass around the keeper and into the goal got South the comeback win. As Walden restarted play with a centre-pass, the whistle for full-time sounded.
Overall a good start to the season, for ace playmaker and new captain Joe Whittaker and team, against a skillful Walden outfit.
