Do As We Say, Not As We Do…
Kim CooilAs you are all well aware, this year's captain is George Hurford and vice is the legendary Kimberley Cooil. Now I know what you are all thinking...what a formidable combination. You may not be aware of this, but on occasion we could both potentially be called hot-headed, I know, hard to believe right? At this point I would like to add, I am the calmer and more collected of the two (no, really!!!)
So let me set the scene of this Saturday's match. We were once again home at our Fortress, who has yet to disappoint in protecting us from the opposition. We arrived very early on as our Dr Captain was anticipating our tardiness (not mentioning Liles or Caroline in this at all).
The first half started a little slowly for South and we got slightly unlucky from a defensive short corner within the first two minutes. We settled into the match soon after this and began working the ball around seeing some good transferring from our insides, halves and centre-mid trying to work it up to our forwards. We began building the pressure and the St Ives' goalie started having to make some excellent saves to keep us out.
Eventually we scored through Sophie and then the goals just kept coming with some amazing left post work from Caz and some great strikes from Laura and Sophie. We ended the first half 4-1 up. We had begun playing as a unit and passing the ball well, improving on our positioning and linking play. Oh, and also Emma Fairlie fell over backwards just because she wanted to.
Unfortunately I cannot recall much of the second half performance, mainly because it was distinctly averaaaaage. Liles however did score a fantastic goal, much to the delight of Caroline and myself! What else happened: George yelled at a girl to "shut up" (I'm sure she suffers from rage blackouts) and there was some sort of kerfuffle on the top of the D involving one of the St Ives players ending up on the floor. I'm pretty sure she ran into one of our players and just bounced off, although I cannot be sure. I got hit in the tummy by a bullet-speed ball which led me to very gracefully leave the pitch. Our captain was so pleased when I called her back on to the pitch, shouting "Kim, you could have let me get my breath back." Sorry, Dr. Captain, next time I will be more considerate.
Although the match could have been described as feisty at some points, it must be pointed out that both teams were very sporting at the end, united perhaps in the enjoyment of seeing me get hit in the ribs. And so we went off to the club house for some chicken noodle soup! Lemon of the Match was awarded to myself, for being innocently involved in the aforementioned kerfuffle. We had a four way tie for Man of the Match, suggesting that either we all had such excellent matches or that we played really well as a unit.
And so I would like to comment on the saying "leading by example". Although we try, it may in fact be better to just "do as we say, not as we do."
