Trick or defeat

Sophie McComish

What a glorious day for a spot of hockey! The day started well with everyone turning up to the right pitch this week. Georgie had the girls pumped up and ready for a tough game against her childhood club, City of Peterborough.

Placed just above us in the league, we were expecting to have a hard game on our hands so straight from the whistle we put the pressure on. Training definitely paid off as the channelling and short passes were on point as we moved the ball effortlessly up the pitch with brilliant linking play from Emma, Liles and Georgie.

Our defence saw very little action as we dominated the game and before long Jess crashed the ball into the back of the net with a deflection off an opposition defender’s hand - she obviously hadn’t seen Jess hit a ball before or she might have moved a bit sooner.

With a suspected broken thumb, or at least slightly maimed, City of Peterborough were brought down to ten due to lack of subs and the player advantage soon began to show. Super runs from forwards Laura, Jess and Sophie left the opposition stretched and created many opportunities for shots on goal. Jess managed another goal (perhaps none of the opposition defenders fancied a broken limb) before Caroline and Laura made it four-nil by half time with silky skills in the circle.

The second half saw solid performances from Julie, Caroline and Laura on the left hand side creating plenty of chances on goal and winning several short corners. Great passes across the goal saw Sophie score her first of the match and soon after Jess stuck the ball from a penalty corner and slid her fourth past the keeper.

At six-nil up, our defence were getting a little bored (you’re welcome) as the game continued to be played at the other end of the pitch but Ellie and Polly always managed to put a stop to any breaks from City of Peterborough. After last week it seems Liles has got a taste for forward rolls and decided to try and perfect her head dive, giving us all a laugh and no doubt a few votes for lemon of the match.

A great run from Bex saw a pass to Jess in the D, who crashed the ball into the goal with only a swish of net to be heard, luckily it wasn’t a crack to the head of the keeper. With Jess subbed off to give her a break from scoring all the goals, Sophie and Laura played the ball around the keeper giving Sophie her second goal. Bex came very close to scoring after an impressive drive into the circle but ended up lying on top of the goalie instead. Maybe she just needed a hug? Despite being eight-nil down City of Peterborough didn’t give up and forced Ali into a couple of saves and made the game more exciting for her. However with Jess back on the pitch it wasn’t long before she slotted in her fifth and final goal.

The final whistle blew seeing Cambridge South win 9-0. What happened to Laura…only one goal this week??? Even Sophie managed 2! Man of the match went to Jess for her great play on and off the ball and for scoring so many goals and unusually lemon on the match also went to Jess for disfiguring a City of Peterborough defender, and was shared by Bex for her fall/cuddle with the keeper.

A great team performance (#SOLID) and an impressive goal difference made for a really enjoyable game. Here’s hoping there is plenty more of that to come!
