South Triumph in Local Derby
Georgie HurfordSouth arrived at the Perse Girls' pitch with a sense of purpose...let's get the ball in the back of the net and get this done. It may not have been beautiful hockey but our aim was achieved as the goals just kept coming.
Alas, Captain Georgie lost the toss (for the first time this season I might add). There were mutterings of, "Is this an omen of things to come?" Don't be silly.
South responded by quickly gaining possession from a City push back. Following some nicely linked passes in the midfield, Elaine pushed the ball past the keeper. Another goal followed shortly after with Sophie getting stuck in and scoring after a scramble on the line. Elaine then showcased her silky stick skills by taking the ball past, no...not just one defender but two, and the keeper! The spectatators (namely Lee, baby Ryan, Laurie and Sophie's bf??) just couldn't believe what they were seeing as she proceeded to calmly slot the ball into the back of the goal (and she'd barely slept the night before). The crowd went balistic.
By this point, Laura ("Five-Goals-A-Game") Ludlow was itching to get in on the action and proceeded to score two great goals following crosses into the D. As the first half came to a close, the icing on the cake was the award of a penalty flick for a City foot on the line. Cool as a cucumber, Sophie foxed the goalie with a well-timed push into the right hand corner. Half time score: 7-0.
The second half is a bit hazy...South definitely seemed to relax and City returned with a renewed sense of vigour. Despite the scoreline, City held a fair amount of possession but were unable to get past the impenetrable defence of Ellie, Polly and Kim whose well-timed tackles saw the City players frustrated time after time. Even Ali G managed to get a few touches of the ball. Caroline, Emma, Bex and Liles continued to work hard in the midfield with some fabulous triangle passing and this paid off as, following a cross into the D, Laura walloped the ball past the keeper for a final time.
So all in all a successful day at the office and done in great time to allow Georgie to skulk off for a cup of tea and a cream cake. As South 1s confidence continues to build, let's just hope the momentum can be maintained for our next City clash in a few weeks' time.

Apparently afternoon tea is not a good enough excuse for leaving the game early
