5IVE - KEEP ON MOVIN’ (Theme for the game = movement +5 goals… get it!)
Jess RobinsWell, Cambridge South Ladies' 1s are on form with some big wins this season. However we could not match the 8-0 or 9-0 wins from the previous weeks and would have to settle with ONLY 5! Alice Hug, we need you back!
The whistle went and it was a less than comfortable start with a few hectic breaks from March. However after some great tackling from Emma, Diane and Ellie at the back saw the ball passed up towards the forwards. Georgie sadly didn’t have too much to do at Left Back, so she doesn’t get any praise here (I joke…you did great when the ball came your way!)
Some accurate passes from Caroline, Lauren and Kim allowed Sophie and Laura to run the March defenders ragged. The first goal of the game was a ‘text book’ short corner strike from Jess after a rather interesting clearance from March. Apparently the ball was ‘lifted’, ‘dangerous’, ‘illegally cleared’ from a 16. None of us were really sure what happened but it resulted in a short corner and we scored so 'thank you' must go to the umpires.
With Emma always pinching March balls on the right and excellent movement from Caroline and Lauren as inners, the forwards had a more interesting game than the backs. Laura and Sophie provided great support up front allowing many crosses to be within centimetres of the goal. Not sure how the second goal was scored but something along the lines of another short corner strike from Jess.
2-0 up at half time but it wasn’t enough. Our motivational teacher Miss Cooil gave us a few wise words…some alluded to Netball (not sure that is a good thing) and some to a few of her favourite things (hockey, wine, chocolate and sleep – lets hope in that order), but we went out harder this time round. Georgie thought it was best to get more involved in the game so moved herself over to right back as left back was boring! Sorry Emma you must do what the Dr orders.
Debutant and young one Lauren played brilliantly, working well with old school coach Caroline to get the ball forward. The backs of Georgie, Diane, Ellie and Emma stopped Loopy from having any fun! Kim’s never ending running worked wonders and Super Skills Speedy Sophie did some great runs around most of the March players and crossed some immense balls to Laura who was always in the right place at the right time. Great work all of you! Just one thing - does anyone else think Sophie has glue on her stick?
Third, fourth and fifth goals from Jess, not entirely sure how but it definitely seemed to be down to great teamwork and movement from everyone. They were along the lines of passes from Sophie and/or Laura to Jess at the top of the D who smacked them into the goal and a great long pass from Diane (spanning the entire pitch) that found Jess who subsequently bulldozed a March player to score the final goal.
Well done Ladies 1s', smashing play by all and lets make sure that next week we keep up the movement on and off the ball (like Netballers) and continue to keep the goals coming!
