The Match That Almost Never Was
Ellie RaffanSouth L1s nearly got a lie in this weekend, with an early cancellation by opposition Nomads 2s who were struggling to raise a team and find an umpire. However, by 9am the game was back on. South congregated with the intention of extending their goal difference against the bottom team in the league.
Nomads' nine outfield players put up a valiant fight to hold a coordinated and slickly passing South to four goals in the first half. A half time agreement that we were playing well but could be even more aggressive on goal meant the team went out harder in the second half. Capitalising on a tiring Nomads team, the goals just kept going in – a change from our usual slow-down at the end of matches, and commendable as a result.
We kinda lost count of the goals, but there were five for Jess (including a couple of sneaky steals on the line!), four for Alice (as sharp as ever, as demonstrated by a brilliant close angle shot into the top corner), three for Caz (including the goal of the match, a cool dribble from the baseline, past several players, then reverse stick lifted over the goalie), two for Captain George and one for Sophie.
Laura was awarded Man of the Match for her usual strength on the ball, well deployed slightly further back on the pitch this week. We really appreciated that Nomads made the effort to get a team out for the game – it would have been easier and less painful for their goal difference to have conceded. The result means we go into next week's game against third-placed St Ives 2s as leaders of the division with sixty-four goals scored and only six conceded all season.
