L2 0-8 Cambridge University Ladies 3
Polly ThompsonWe were expecting a tough match against Cambridge University 3s, but after our improvements since the start of the season we were optimistic that we could put up a good fight. Inspired by Cath's enthusiastic pre match chat (despite the hangover), we went out hard.
Unfortunately, the musical warm up seemed to have given the university team an even bigger boost and they got a couple of early goals. However, as we settled down the defence's structure improved and, despite the ball spending most of the time in our D, we managed to hold them to only 5-0 at half time.
The second half saw even more improvement, with much more South possession, awesome saves by Ali G and the ball even reaching their D! Some excellent runs by Emma at centre half and strong running off the ball by all the forwards and mids helped create some great series of passes. Heads didn't go down but unfortunately the university were still dominant and the match finished 8-0.
Man of the match went to Ali - without her the score would have definitely reached double figures. Special mention also goes to Jen for amazing play in defence, as well as consistently breaking down their short corners, and Jo, making an awesome debut also in defence.
Lemon went to Cath, for turning up hungover and without paper so the man of the match votes were done on a beer box!
The score reflected the fact that the university were a well drilled and individually skilled team. However the improvement of the team play and fitness of the 2s was obvious, and bodes well for the rest of the season.
