Hard Work in Haverhill
Lucy BucknellAfter a very quick warm up following the team convoy arriving in Haverhill later than planned, Haverhill set off with a determined start, getting their first goal rather early on. This put Cambridge South 2s on the back foot and Haverhill continued their domination in the first half with the score being five-nil by the end of the half.
Cambridge South defence kept on fighting throughout. The ball decided it liked Cambridge South's players' feet, ending up with the team showing some silky football skills. Unfortunately however this ended up with a number of shorts for Haverhill.
Despite some massive hits from Haverhill, South kept their heads up and we were even getting cheers from the sideline from Haverhill supporters.
In the second half Cambridge showed some promising play in the first twenty minutes and managed to get a few breaks towards goal. However these efforts were unsuccessful in producing the first golden goal. The team's determination to soldier on was shown by Cath forgetting to remove her hoodie when it was her time to come on. This of course also led to Cath being awarded lemon of the match.
Haverhill continued to show great form, with good passing and strong hits enabling them to score another four goals in the second half.
The support from Haverhill supporters just kept coming and they congratulated us on our stamina and determination at the end of the game. At least we had fun, even if it wasn't the result we could have wished for. Especially when we had so many new players in the team.
Throughout the match Shannon showed determination in goal, intercepting many hard shots on target. Haverhill were overheard on pitch describing Shannon to have an ability to "inflate in goal as the ball approaches her". All Shannon's efforts during the match lead to her to being named man of the match.
