Almost a Win!

Dani Kilsby-Steele

It was a chilly morning to take on St Ives 3s, but Ley (standing in as skipper) started proceedings positively by winning the coin toss and giving us first push back.

I think it is fair to say we surprised ourselves with some outstanding play right from the start. South dominated the ball from the off, with some brilliant linked up passes and utilisation of the pitch. The ball was regularly making its way up towards the St Ives goal and a near miss on the post by Hannah put their goalie under pressure early on. Moments later, another scurry on the goal line and a sneaky shot executed perfectly by Steph, and South took the lead with the first half ending 1-0 to us!

The second half started strongly, with Serin and Lauren expertly defending the ball and pinging it back up the pitch. In midfield Jo and Ley were putting their skills to good use, weaving the ball around the opposition players and giving us some more opportunities in the D, but unfortunately we couldn't quite break through their defence.

As legs became weary, St Ives managed to find a burst of energy and steal one between Naomi's legs, bringing the score to 1-1. This was a massive shame, as Naomi had been having a cracking time in goal, deflecting a number of balls with some nifty kicks!

Both teams tired towards the end, but everyone continued to give it their all, and despite a few hairy short corners secured by St Ives, we managed to hold on for the draw right up to the final whistle.

Man of the match went to Naomi for her outstanding work in goal and Lemon went to Esmé for injuring herself early on, although as she provided cake and disappeared early, Dani took the onesie home in honour of some fabulous stick tackles (one of which actually made the opposition laugh!)

Overall, a brilliant game and we will all be very sad to play our final match next week.
