Under the St Ives floodlights...freaking cold and hard work!

Rasmus Petersen

The team's chief statistician had done his homework and reminded his team mates that this would be harder than the 7-1 win in the reverse fixture. And he was right: the M3s were facing a totally different team, supported by fans with jugs of beer, keeping them warm and, well, very supportive!

It was in many ways an odd last game before Christmas. With several injuries and people away, Tom South was signed up for the match when spotted at the library. Nick Greaves, available as he was on his Christmas break, was added as well. And on game day the chief statistician transformed into goalkeeper. Some concerned eyebrows were raised when the leg guards initially went on upside-down, but no need to worry: some crucial sliding stick saves were made by Jan in the second half.

As for the game, it got off to a rocky start, with rolling subs and people being pushed around to various positions. A 1-0 half-time lead was secured by an early goal from Rob Barton. Joe Whittaker made things more comfortable in the second half, 2-0. But with increased pressure from St Ives, a goal was conceded, before Dave Monck secured the win following a short.

The story about how our favourite lemon, Joe Whittaker, almost got the skipper sin-binned will have to wait. But fear not, it is a tale that no doubt will be retold again and again at match teas and other pub gatherings to come.

To reuse Rob Barton's words when leaving St Ives: stay fit over Christmas!
