A tough trip to the fens

John Greaves

A lovely autumn afternoon in the fens, with a full South 4th team against a decent bunch of blokes from Spalding. What could possibly go wrong?

Not much, other than the superior ability of the home side; and fitness; and goals.

Cambridge South battled away, but were three-nil down at half time as the otherwise awesome central defensive partnership of James S and man of the match Jim S were unable to prevent some moments of individual brilliance. In midfield, youngster Laurie Ho and slightly less young Wilco chased and tackled, but always seemed to be outnumbered, and we were unable to put many moves together.

The second half was more even. We even got a consolation goal from a textbook short corner routine, Boris injecting to skipper John G who stopped it, and whacked it in from the top of the D inside the near post. This gave the away team confidence to try some more exotic tactics, with a couple of great Shabhaz long range aerials opening up chances. Unfortunately it was Spalding who actually scored a couple more to run out deserved 5-1 winners.

As always, we never gave up and indeed much of the latter stages were evenly contested, but it was not enough.

The teas were good though.
