A Close Mid-Table Battle

John Greaves

A closely but fairly fought game started off a bit worryingly with the umpire banning talking...at least to him (only joking, Bhav). This didn't prevent a wholehearted tussle with both teams doing quite a lot of shouting, interspersed with decent attacking hockey.

St Ives had the upper hand with two early goals, the first arising from some iffy defensive tackling, and the second from the home defence fatally pausing expecting the whistle to blow.

Luckily this didn't dampen the spirits and both Boris Lossy and Joe Whittaker were unlucky to have one-on-ones snuffed out by the rapidly advancing St Ives keeper. South got back into it shortly before half time as the persistent skipper, John Greaves, latched onto a loose ball in the D and played a neat one-two off the keeper's pads to score with an unstoppable second attempt at knee height.

The second half was even. Cambridge South had our moments with some free flowing moves, often prompted by newcomer and MoM James Menzies. He was popping up everywhere to dazzle with his pace and skills, covering more ground than anyone. All sixteen players played their part but the home team were unable to snatch an equaliser.
